Voices from the Yiddish Stage
Thursday, April 07, 2016, 06:30pm

Inspired by our exhibition New York's Yiddish Theater: From the Bowery to Broadway, Christa Whitney, director of the Yiddish Book Center’s Wexler Oral History Project, will share video highlights from the project's growing collection of Yiddish theater stories. Through interviews with world-renowned musicians, actors, and activists—as well as with “bubbes” and “zaydes” (Jewish grandmas and grandpas)—the Oral History Project has reflected on the changing nature of Yiddish language and culture. Punctuated by appearances from familiar faces such as Leonard Nimoy and Fyvush Finkl, Whitney's videos will feature commentary from avid theater goers and actors who started out on the Eastern European stage under the tutelage of pioneers such as Ida Kaminska and Dzigan & Schumacher. She will also show interviews with a younger generation of actors and directors on the future of Yiddish theater.
